Merrick cracks ton in Phoenix win

IT probably took a little longer than he expected, but Ernie Merrick has finally become the first manager in the A-League to notch 100 wins.

Now in charge at the Wellington Phoenix, the 63-year-old Scotsman endured a winless first four rounds of the current campaign.

But the Phoenix has now strung together back-to-back victories for the first time since round three last season following a 2-0 triumph over the Central Coast Mariners.

The result followed a 2-0 win over the Newcastle Jets the previous week.

Merrick will be hard-pressed to make it win No.101 next Saturday in Wellington, however, with the home side facing an in-form Victory - a team that pumped them 6-1 at Etihad Stadium a fortnight ago.

Merrick, who enjoyed 70 of his wins with the Victory between 2006 and 2011, is clear at the top of the table for wins as manager.

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold is next best (79) but has been gaining ground with his Sky Blues on a four-match winning run and heading the A-League ladder.
