Merrett hungry to eclipse Suns

DANIEL Merrett has achieved a lot in his AFL career.

But he has never played in a winning side against the Gold Coast Suns.

The tall defender said it still stung that the Suns "got the first one off the bat" last season in what is certain to become an intense rivalry between the two Queensland teams.

"There was such a big build-up. We were really tense before that game. We really wanted to win and they came out and shocked us," Merrett said.

"I suppose it's that backyard rivalry - you always want to beat your neighbour.

"The Q Clash is one we want to win."

The Lions bounced back with a 62-point hammering of their neighbours in round 21, but neither Merrett, nor captain Jonathan Brown, were playing.

Both will be in the line-up on Saturday and Merrett tipped his skipper to have a big game in his first appearance at the Gabba this season.

"Johnny's just glad to be back out there," Merrett said.

"He's really fired up and it's the first (Q Clash) for him.

Gold Coast hard man Campbell Brown is also expected to return from injury for what would be his first Q Clash.
