Ballina surveyor recognised at State Excellence Awards

"THE only place success comes before work is in the dictionary."

"Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."

Armed with those pearls of wisdom, given to him by his parents, Ballina's Chris Abbott has forged a successful surveying career.

His work was recognised earlier this month at the Annual State Excellence Awards in Surveying, where he was named Professional of the Year.

"I was very humbled to receive the award," Mr Abbott said.

"It was given to me in recognition of the work that I do in teaching and mentoring young surveying students and other work in the surveying industry helping rural surveyors."

Born in Grafton, Mr Abbott studied surveying at Newcastle University and also worked for the Lands Department at Grafton.

He graduated from university in 1984 with honours and became a registered surveyor in 1978.

He now owns successful surveying practices in Ballina and Maclean.

"I employ young graduates when I can," he said.

"When I started out I was given very good training and now I'm pleased to be able to pass on those skills to the next generation of surveyors.

"This is not just a job."

As well as running his two surveying practices, Mr Abbott also works as a casual academic at Newcastle University and is an examiner with the Board of Surveyors.

He has had a busy career, but it's one that he continues to enjoy.

There is one more pearl of wisdom that has helped to keep Mr Abbott going: "Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive!"
