UNIVERSITY of Southern Queensland graduates have proved once again they're the shining stars on the Queensland theatre scene with several performers nominated for Matilda Awards.

Former student Dirk Hoult has been nominated for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his part in The Ugly One, graduates Nelle Lee and Amy Ingram are both nominated in the Best Independent Production category for their work as co-artistic directors in Animal Farm and Rabbit, respectively, and Anna Mowry is up for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Amadeus

Also, former USQ staff member Kate Wilson is nominated for Best Actress in a Lead Role for her part in Water Wars and is up against USQ graduate Melanie Zanetti for her performance in Pygmalion.

Melanie Zanetti had a successful run at last year's Matildas picking up the gong for Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role while Amy Ingram was also crowned Best Emerging Artist.

The Matilda Awards recognise excellence in theatre and opera in Queensland and have been operating annually since 1987.

USQ School of Creative Arts Theatre Discipline Coordinator Scott Alderdice said USQ theatre graduates had for many years built an outstanding reputation for their tenacity, for their high standards of industry recognised skills and for their commitment to building ongoing careers in theatrical practice.

Winners in each category will be announced on Monday, March 12 at a gala ceremony at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.

Melanie Zanetti will also star as Juliet in Queensland Theatre Company's production of Romeo and Juliet, which will run from April 21 to May 13 at the Playhouse, QPAC, in Brisbane.
