Meet the family behind the $190,000 heifer

THE Thompson family have lived a dream 24 hours.

Yesterday their heifer broke the Australian angus record, going under the hammer for $190,000, and last night they received an inch of rain.

"It's the best 24 hours we have had in a long time," Ross Thompson said.

Millah Murrah Angus stud, situated near Bathurst in New South Wales, actually broke several records yesterday, as their 234 sold females averaged $13,709, toppling past cow-sale records of $9000.

On top of that, their second highest priced lot went for $54,000, which also broke the current record of $45,000.

However, it's the sale of Millah Murrah Prue M4 to Brooklana Angus stud, which has caused a stir within the cattle industry.

Mr Thompson admits to feeling quietly confident she would be well received by bidders.

The 21-month old heifer is out of donor female Millah Murrah Prue F141 and by Coonamble Hector H249.

"She has enormous presence and a beautiful disposition," he said.

"She is from a good proven pedigree, which is a long way removed from what's on offer across much of the market.

"I marketed her as one of the best animals we had bred in 50 years and the market agreed."

Today, it's back to reality for the family as they have been kept busy loading cattle in pouring rain.

But there are no complaints from Mr Thompson.

"We are mindful that this is the time of our lives," he said.

"This is the cumulation of 50 years of hard work, we are just so grateful for the support we have received."
