Meet state award-winning designers who hail from region

WHETHER you want a home or commercial property designed, there is a range of award-winning building designers to choose from in the region.

The south-west and Darling Downs businesses took out almost one-third of all the awards at this year's Building Designers Association of Queensland State Awards in Brisbane.

There were more than 170 entries across the state with 96 state finalist entries. Of those, 13 were from the south-west and Darling Downs area.

The finalists were spread across 30 categories and our region took home eight awards which was almost a third of all awards.

"Considering this is a state event which involves projects from each region, this is a great achievement for Toowoomba," a BDAQ spokesman said.

Nspire Planning and Design, Alisco Designs and StuXi Design were the big winners of the night.

Alisco Designs won two awards for residential design and residential alterations.

It was their Withcott house, specially designed around the natural environment, that won them the residential design: new houses $500,001 - $750,000 construction cost award.

Director and senior designer Scott Keane said he was proud of the unique design.

"It really blends with the environment, making it quintessential Australian architecture," he said.

"The open planned house was designed purely around the natural landmarks. It is an amazing home hidden away off the highway."

Mr Keane said he was thrilled with the win and was happy so many state awards were handed to designers in the area.

"We want people to know they don't have to go to Brisbane and other areas to have incredibly designed homes or proprieties," he said.

"We have so many award-winning designers right here in the region."

Nspire's Ian Darnell won for his simplistic design of a Bryne's Farmhouse, east of Texas.

"It met the brief of simplistic, easy to construct, open space and good use of the northern sun and views," he said.

"It is nice to win every now and then. It was a bit of a surprise but it was great to get a win."

All state award winners will progress to the national awards, held in October.
