MAY Holgate was very happy with her 100th birthday present from Mayor Paul Pisasale, who gave her more than a few birthday kisses.

"He's very dishy, isn't he?" she said with a cheeky grin.

Mrs Holgate celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family at Bundaleer Lodge Nursing Home yesterday.

Born in England, the great-great grandmother was a "Ten Pound Pom" who migrated to New Zealand.

There she met her husband Frank, a handsome fellow ex-pat before moving to Australia.

"The most amazing thing I have done in 100 years is marry my sweetheart," Mrs Holgate said.

"We were married for 59 years."

After spending just a few minutes with the centenarian, it was clear to see she still has a keen sense of humour.

"I really don't see what the fuss is about. It's not that big a deal," she said of her birthday celebration.

When asked about what memories had stuck with her over 100 years, Mrs Holgate was proud to tell story of when she took not one, but two young American soldiers to the cinema.

"They were very nice, I can tell you," she said.

Mrs Holgate's daughter, Linda Mellor, said her mother had always been strong and hard-working.

"As you can see she doesn't mind a handsome man," she laughed.

"But she has always worked hard, I think the key to her old age is stubbornness. She is in great health and has always been a happy, busy mother."

Mrs Mellor said her mother wasn't afraid to learn new things and taught herself how to play the piano at age 70.

"She still plays today," she said.

"Mum's sister lived to 102 and her brother lived to 96 so there are very good genes in the family. We'll be back again for the 110th."
