Maroons legends name their side for Origin II
THREE of Queensland's most iconic names have thrown up a left-field bench selection for the Maroons' State of Origin II team.
Rugby league legends Mal Meninga, Justin Hodges and Billy Moore were locked in a room and asked to do the job of a Queensland selection panel.
They revealed their side to Queenslanders Only and unsurprisingly there was a couple of interesting selections on the team sheet.
And at the top of the pile was young winger Corey Oates sitting on the bench.
The trio moved Oates from a starting wing spot to the bench, replacing him with Darius Boyd on the flank and bringing in veteran Billy Slater to do the fullback role.
Valentine Holmes would also make his debut in a revamped backline.
"The premise to start with was we picked our best 17, and that's why we found a spot for Holmes," Moore said.
"Oates did nothing wrong in game one, he was magnificent on that left wing, he basically repelled NSW single-handedly at times.
"But we put him on the bench because we want impact from our bench, and we think that he can do that."
Meninga - a former Maroons coach and current Kangaroos honcho - sees the towering Oates as a future Origin forward.
"It's a dynamic bench with Corey Oates," Meninga told Queenslanders Only.
"He can play back row, that's where he wants to play eventually and to play 30 minutes in the back row, I think he can do that at Origin level."
The trio also brought in Jarrod Wallace to make his Origin debut at prop while axing a number of Queensland veterans.
