Meet Mango the baby rhino - the newest resident of Australia Zoo

Mango ready to meet the public at Australia Zoo

AUSTRALIA Zoo's newest bundle of joy is finding her feet after starting off a bit 'wobbly.

One month old Mango, the second rhino to be born in Queensland, has moved onto running after learning to walk withing just hours of her birth.

She's now getting ready to meet her adoring public for the first time over the Easter break.

Africa exhibit keeper Steve Blanchard said even though Mango weighed between 40-50kgs at birth, she was on the small side.

"Lately she's putting on a kilogram every day so she's bulking up now," he said.

"She started off a bit wobbly but she's finding her feet and running around like crazy."

Mango got her name from a Facebook competition.

Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin picked it last month after it was suggested by a young girl from Toowoomba.

"Apparently she was looking at a mango and said to her mum how much it looks like the rhino's head which funnily enough it actually does," Mr Blanchard said.

Mango's mother is Inyeti and her Dad's name is DJ,  southern white rhinoceros.

It's a species listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to poaching threats and illegal use of rhino horn.

Both parents call Australia Zoo home.

Mango is also an important part of the regional rhino breeding program, and will act as an ambassador for her wild cousins in Africa who are being persecuted by poachers who sell rhino horn for medicinal or ornamental purposes.

Australia Zoo has announced visitors throughout the Easter break will be the first to meet the new baby rhino.

Those who book in a rhino encounter between March 29 to April 15 will get the chance to meet Mango.
