Man who stole car with children in it to go back to jail

A RECENTLY released prisoner, who stole a family car at Coffs Harbour with a toddler still strapped in the back seat, will spend another two years in jail.

Two young girls were waiting for their dad to return from a nearby shop when parolee Dwayne Peckham jumped into the front seat of their parked car at Castle St last year.

The older girl managed to escape but her two-year-old sister was trapped.

Her disappearance sparked a massive police search which ended with the discovery of the abandoned car at an Ocean Parade motel about 90 minutes later.

Coffs Harbour detectives arrested Peckham at Park Beach the following day.

He was charged with unlawfully take/drive motor vehicle with person in it and custody of a knife in a public place.

Following several adjournments, Peckham was back in the Coffs Harbour District Court on Wednesday.

Judge Peter Maiden sentenced him to three years in jail with a non-parole period of two years.

He ordered that Peckham be released in December, 2016 to serve the last year of his sentence on supervised parole at Coffs Harbour.
