Surfer struck by lightning remains critical but stable

UPDATE MONDAY: THE man, aged in his 30s, who was struck by lightening at Suffolk Park yesterday remains in a critical but stable condition in Tweeds Heads Hospital.

The man was surfing at Tallow Beach when he was struck.

Police and ambulance were called to the scene around 10.30am.

 

UPDATE 5:20pm: IT IS BELIEVED the man who was struck by lightning at a beach in Suffolk Park was a surfer in his 30s.  

He was taken to Tweed Heads hospital this afternoon where he remains in a critical but stable condition. 

The ABC reported the Byron Bay Board Riders' Club were holding a junior surfing contest only 100m away from where the man was struck.

 

UPDATE 1:10pm: Petra Smagcka who was in a nearby house said she was cleaning when she heard a crack of lightning over Tallow Beach where a man was struck by lightning.

"I was very scared ... I heard a massive sound," she said.

"There were maybe two strikes.

"I was thinking no one would be swimming.

"It was really raining and you couldn't go out, and then for five minutes it was okay, then raining, raining, raining."

She said there were two or three ambulance vehicles at the Wareham St beach access point. 

 

UPDATE 12:05pm: A MAN believed to be in his 30s was struck by lightning while swimming at Tallow Beach in Suffolk Park this morning.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics were called to Alcorn St about 10.30 am after reports a man had been struck by lightning.

The spokesman said when paramedics and police arrived they discovered the man was in the ocean when he was hit by a bolt of lightning.

Paramedics worked on the man, whose age is unknown, for some time on Suffolk Park beach in rainy conditions.

The man was taken to Tweed Heads hospital in a critical condition.

 

Initial report: POLICE and ambulance are on route to Suffolk Park after reports that a man was struck by lightning.

The initial reports indicate the man was on the beach at the time.
