Man faces trial for rape of teenage boy

A BUNDABERG man accused of raping a teenage boy a number of times in 2008 and 2009 is facing trial in Bundaberg District Court.

Shannon Robert Barrett has pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape and one of assault causing bodily harm.

Prosecutor Sam Bain told the jury in his opening address, Barrett had achieved the rapes through assaults and threatening and controlling behaviour.

He alleged there had been a level of compliance by the complainant because of those assaults and threats.

"The defendant has treated and acted towards (the complainant) as if he was nothing more than his possession," he said.

Mr Bain said the alleged rapes happened in 2008 and 2009.

He said the complainant, who was 17 at the time, was homeless and lived with various friends and relatives.

The complainant met Barrett at a birthday party at a house where he was staying when the first alleged rape happened.

The complainant slept at the house, and Barrett slept in the same room.

The prosecutor said after the complainant went to bed, he was woken up by Barrett lying on top of him.

Until he left the house where he was staying, Mr Bain said the complainant said Barrett would rape him in the bedroom or while he was in the shower.

Mr Bain said the jury would hear from the complainant who would tell them if he said no and tried to push him away, Barrett would punch him.

As the complainant moved from house to house, Barrett allegedly continued to follow and harass him.

Eventually the two lived together at a house in Bundaberg before moving to a shed, moving again to live with a friend and finally living in a caravan with sexual abuse alleged at each premises.

The prosecutor said Barrett told the arresting officer in an interview there had been no sex before the complainant turned 18, and the two were in a loving homosexual relationship.

The trial continues before Judge Leanne Clare.
