Man dies in freak BMX accident

A MAN has died after suffering a cardiac arrest and head injuries during an unauthorised bicycle ride at the Gympie BMX track at One Mile.

Emergency workers were called to the scene about 5.40pm after a crash involving a man, 38.

A shocked Gympie BMX community immediately expressed its regret on its Cooloola BMX page, saying it appeared "a man has tragically passed away from a very serious injury".

Later, BMX Australia released a statement that the organisation and "the entire BMX community are saddened by the passing of a 38-year-old man at the Cooloola BMX track in Gympie on Sunday".

BMX Australia general manager Mark Louis said the man was not a member of the Cooloola BMX Club and did not hold a BMX Australia licence.

Mr Louis said the man "suffered serious head injuries" after coming off his bike between 5.30pm and 6pm and was confirmed dead a short time later.

"The track was unsupervised by accredited BMX Australia officials at the time of the incident and the man was not wearing safety equipment."

BMX Australia president Barry Knight said "the man's death was a tragedy that possibly could have been avoided".

"Our thoughts are with the deceased man's family and friends at this time and I extend to them the heartfelt sympathies of the BMX family," Mr Knight said.

"A tragedy such as this reminds us of the need to have accredited supervision at tracks and for riders to always wear the required safety gear," he said in a media release yesterday.
