Well known doctor critically injured in cycling accident

UPDATE 12.17pm: A CYCLIST who is in a critical condition following a crash this morning is popular Alstonville GP Nigel Chamberlain.

Dr Chamberlain, 60, was riding along Dillons Ln, Alstonville, at about 7.40am, when he came off his bikecrashing through saplings and landing on the embankment of a creek.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene and when they arrived and saw Dr Chamberlain's condition the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was tasked to assist.

Paramedics treated Dr Chamberlain at the scene before he was airlifted by the helicopter.

The Alstonville Medical Centre practice manager, who did not want to be named, confirmed staff were distraught at the news.

She said Dr Chamberlain had worked at the medical centre for more than 20 years.

"It was a serious pushbike accident and we are uncertain about his condition," the practice manager said.

"He has been airlifted by air ambulance to Southport's Gold Coast University Hospital."

The practice manager said staff at the centre will endeavour to provide the best care possible to Dr Chamberlain's patients.

"We are all very distraught and concerned."

"Dr Chamberlain is a very well loved and well respected doctor."

UPDATE: 8.50am: The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter has reported that the injured cyclist is suffering head and chest injuries.

It is understood the cyclist came off his bike on Dillons Lane at Alstonville and collided with a tree.

Original report: A MAN is in a critical condition after coming off his pushbike at Alstonville this morning.

A spokesman from NSW Ambulance media said they received a call about the incident at 7.35am.

"A man ... has come off his pushbike at Dillons Lane at Alstonville," he said.

"He is in a critical condition."

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter has been tasked and the man will be flown to hospital.
