A MAN with ties to the Coffs Coast has died on the Gold Coast, after he was punched during an altercation in a supermarket.

The 46-year-old, who has recently lived at Miami, suffered significant head injuries.

Police said the man's family from Coffs Harbour were by his side as doctors worked to try and keep him alive.

A 39-year-old man was arrested and charged with manslaughter, following the incident in the Miami Coles Supermarket on Monday just after 6pm.

Queensland Police Detective Inspector Brian Swan said the men came in together and started shopping before an argument erupted.

"One man pushed the other then punched him once," Inspt. Swan said.

"The victim fell over unconscious and was taken to a Gold Coast Hospital in a critical condition.

"His family are up from Coffs Harbour and were with him at the Gold Coast Hospital.

Det. Inspt. Swan said the incident highlights the long-running 'One Punch Can Kill' police campaign.

The accused has been refused bail in Southport Court.
