Man charged over sexual assault of 76-year-old woman

POLICE have arrested and charged a 34-year-old man after a 76-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in her home at Kingscliff last week.

The man allegedly entered her unit at about 8pm last Wednesday and sexually assaulted the woman.

The man fled and emergency services were alerted.

The woman was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital for treatment while police established a crime scene at the unit which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command launched an investigation into the incident which included a public appeal for assistance.

Following information received, detectives executed a search warrant at a home on Yao Street, Kingscliff, on Monday where the man was arrested.

Police also seized 100 cannabis plants at the man's home.
