Man run over by police car at Casino park
UPDATE 11.35am Thursday: A MAN who was run over yesterday near the corner of Richmond St and Centre St in Casino was hit by a police car.
The man, believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s, was in a stable condition after the incident yesterday, although a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said he was checked for spinal injuries.
Richmond Local Area Command duty officer, Inspector Nicole Bruce, said the incident happened in Casino Memorial Park shortly after 4pm.
"Police were responding to a theft of alcohol from a retail store nearby and were patrolling [the park] in regards to that," she said.
"Whilst manoeuvring under a tree, they obviously didn't sight the gentlemen on the ground and the vehicle has come into contact with him.
"It was an unfortunate accident.
"Luckily the gentleman didn't sustain serious injuries," she said.
"The Crash Investigation Unit as well as detectives are conducting an investigation and it will be investigated as any another crash would.
"Statements will be collected from witnesses, and if anyone else witnessed the incident (they are advised to) contact the Crash Investigation Unit."
Inspector Bruce said public behaviour in the park was an "ongoing issue" and police conducted "regular patrols in that area responding to calls".
An eyewitness contacted by The Northern Star said they watched in horror as a police car, which was driving slowly through the park, "rolled over" the man, who appeared to be sleeping in the long grass.
The witness said police cars drove through the park on a regular basis.
"They drive through there all the time to check on guys drinking," the person said.
"It's an alcohol-free zone. And they're there drinking every day.
The witness said the man hit by the car "didn't look like he was in any pain at all when he was taken away" by paramedics and tried to get off the paramedics' trolley.
They also said the other people who were in the park at the time "abused police, tried to fight police; it was very volatile".
