Major crime falls, but domestic violence and assaults rise

MAJOR crime trends have fallen on the Mid North Coast, however the March quarterly police statistics show increases in domestic violence, assaults, sexual assaults and stealings from homes.

The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research's latest report indicates across the region domestic violence-related assaults rose by 22.9%, other assaults increased by 6.9%, sexual assaults were up by 19.4% and steal from a dwelling also jumped by 6.4%.

The report based on local police statistics showed falls across the state in robberies without firearms, assaults at licensed premises, break and enters and motor vehicle theft.

Most other categories of crime including non-fatal shootings were stable; but incidences of fraud were up.

Director of the Bureau, Dr Don Weatherburn, said the number of recorded incidents of domestic assault was likely to fall as the offence occurs less in the winter months than during the summer months.

"The significant uptrend in fraud for NSW is partly linked to service station drive-offs but some of the growth in fraud is coming from other businesses such as supermarkets, electronics stores, department stores, licensed premises, general stores, takeaway food outlets, restaurants and public transport," Dr Weatherburn said.

The NSW Government welcomed news of falling crime rates.

"In the two years to March 2013, 15 of the 17 major offence categories have remained stable or are going down," Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Michael Gallacher said.
