Magpies to play hard ball with Beams

IT seems as though Brisbane Lions will have to bargain hard if they want to secure the services of premiership midfielder Dayne Beams from Collingwood.

The 24-year-old All Australian has asked to be traded back to Queensland to be closer to his father who is in remission from cancer and play with his brother Claye at the Lions.

Beams is contracted to the Magpies until 2015, however, and the Lions have been told they will need more than their first draft pick to make the trade happen.

Collingwood list manager Derek Hine told AFL Trade Radio: "From our side of things we clearly rate Dayne as a player that's just really moving into the prime of his career.

"Clearly he's an elite player in the competition.

"It's going to take a little bit more than pick four, put it this way."

Hine said Collingwood had not given up hope of persuading Beams to stay.

The Lions, meanwhile, remain hopeful of persuading key defender Joel Patfull to stay with the club after he was reportedly seeking a move to Sydney Swans a year before his contract expired.

Lions talent acquisition and retention manager Peter Schwab told SEN: "I think Joel has ideas of moving to Sydney after his playing career, and that's known by us.

"But right at the moment … Joel's a two-time club champion and finished third this year, so we'd hope he'd move to Sydney after his footy career."

The club has opened the door for Daniel Merrett to leave the club as the contracted veteran looks at trade options.

Less than a month after saying the 29-year-old was a required player, the Lions are now willing to consider a trade in the upcoming AFL Trade Period.

Peter Schwab said the club would wait to see what options arose before making a call on the big man's future.
