Four month job hunt for Yeppoon girl after job loss
MADDY Chalk has spent the last four months rewriting resumes, driving to job interviews, submitting applications on her laptop and calling around businesses to see if they can give her a job.
But the Yeppoon 20-year-old is still unemployed.
Maddy, who has experience in administration and hospitality, was put out of full time work at the beginning of the year and has been looking for work since, but has been unsuccessful.
From the recent Be Heard survey, 77% of the region's residents believe finding work in Rockhampton is challenging and Maddy couldn't agree with them more.
"Every day for the last four months I've been searching for jobs online, through the paper, through word of mouth and just popping into businesses with my resume," she said.
"There's literally nothing available in Yeppoon where I live and I haven't found anything in Rockhampton either. On the few jobs where I've got a call back and an interview, I get told a few days later that I wasn't successful because they chose someone with more experience.
"The moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed I'm looking for work but there seems to be no jobs on offer here. I've worked in hospitality since I was 13 and I worked in my previous administration job for four months but it's like none of that counts if I don't have two years' experience."
The former St Ursula's student said struggling to find work made her financial future unclear, which coincided with 42% of locals who are not confident in their financial future, according to the survey.
"I will do anything even part time or casual hours because I have bills to pay and loans to pay off," she said.
"I can't even do grocery shopping because I have no income and my poor mum is supporting me at 20. There are days where I just want to give up, but not once have I thought about going on Centrelink because I don't want to do that, I want to earn my own money.
"I want to have a job so I can fund my future travels in a few years' time and support myself when I enrol in the future to study nursing externally but experiencing how much of a challenge it is to find work makes everything uncertain."
