MACKAY'S Kalyn Ponga, 18, could reportedly earn up to $3.5 million in a five-year NRL deal with the Newcastle Knights.

The former Souths junior is still contracted to the North Queensland Cowboys for 2017.

The deal with the Knights will therefore start in 2018 after an immediate release was denied, Channel 7 said.

Triple M reports Newcastle beat six NRL clubs including the Broncos, Titans, Dragons, Parramatta, Bulldogs, and Storm to secure the young gun.

It's believed Newcastle coach Nathan Brown has offered the richest contract for a teenager in the rugby league's 108-year history.
