Lyon keen to prove Australian selectors wrong

CRICKET: Nathan Lyon is hoping a decent Matador Cup campaign will help him retain his place in the Australian one-day international side.

The country's most successful off-spinner was left out of the ODI tour of South Africa, with young leg-spinner Adam Zampa chosen as the only slow-bowling option.

Lyon will start his domestic one-day season on Saturday against the Cricket Australia XI at Hurstville Oval and said it was up to him to make a point to selectors.

"I was well notified about (the South Africa ODI squad omission) after the first Test in Sri Lanka,” Lyon said.

"I know where I stand in one-day cricket and my goal is to still to play all forms of cricket for Australia and that's not going to change.

"I've got to go out and perform well for New South Wales and keep putting my hand up.”

Lyon (pictured) said the criticism received after the recent 3-0 Test loss in Sri Lanka was deserved.

"We didn't perform well,” Lyon said. "We didn't play the Australian way, we didn't perform the way we need to, as the Australian team needs to.”

Meanwhile, Australia's women's team has moved clear at the top of world cricket.

The Southern Stars are now six points clear of nearest rival England after the International Cricket Council released its latest rankings.

New Zealand is in third, with India fourth, West Indies fifth and South Africa ranked sixth.

Meg Lanning's team recently completed a sweep of limited-overs games against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.
