Luke Mortimer chosen in Aust water polo team
Luke was selected in the team after captaining Queensland to a bronze medal win in the week-long competition.
Luke, a former Xavier Catholic College student, started playing water polo at 13 years of age for Alstonville before going to boarding school in Brisbane in 2007 on scholarship with St Peter’s Lutheran College.
Luke has been playing National League for the KFC Breakers for the past two years. Many of his teammates include members of the current Olympic team.
“This selection is a great reward to finish off my representative school sport,” he said.
“After playing for Queensland at the national Under-20s tournament in January, I had not made myself available for the Under-18 Queensland team this year so that I could concentrate on my Year 12 studies,
which meant that I put myself out of contention for the Australian team to compete at the World Cup in August 2009.
“I still have another year in the Under-18s.
“This opportunity will make up for missing out this year, as the schools international competition will be in December after I complete Year 12.”
Luke, who plays centre back and driver, has already been approached by universities in the US to discuss scholarship opportunities for 2010.
