Location of Tough Mudder revealed

A MOSQUITO-ridden dust pit filled with trees, swamp land and a whiff of horse manure has been named the location for the "toughest challenge on the planet".

Caloundra Downs, at the end of Racecourse Rd, is where this year's Tough Mudder Australasia will be held.

Organisers announced the location in an email to entrants yesterday.

Tough Mudder Australasia managing director Drew Ward said the location was chosen to challenge "Mudders" both mentally and physically.

"The Sunshine Coast community has been extremely supportive of Tough Mudder and we can't wait for the event in August," Mr Ward said.

"We're encouraging Queenslanders to sign up and take part in the challenge over the weekend, whether that's as a participant, spectator or even as volunteer."

The obstacle course event is scheduled for August 17-18, a week before the second annual Sunshine Coast Marathon and Community Run Festival.

About 10,000 people have already signed up and organisers are hoping for 30,000 competitors from across Australia.

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesman said council had helped in choice of locations.

"Council assisted in the early stages with the identification of sites that could fulfil the requirements for a Tough Mudder event," the spokesman said.

"A number of sites were identified. At the end of the day, Tough Mudder chose the Caloundra site."

Tough Mudder events are 16-20km obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test all-round strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie.

The course will be built by developer Stockland at Pierce Ave, Caloundra, between Sunshine Coast Industrial Park and Caloundra South land.

Tough Mudder executives will visit on April 15 .
