Lions donate $5000 to ASR

EVEN pelicans walked 100 miles with members of the Ballina Lions to raise $5000 for Australian Seabird Rescue in early October.

And one of wooden pelican walkers – made by Lion John Grant – was given the honour of handing the donation to ASR general manager Rochelle Ferris last Saturday.

The Lions walked 100 miles along the central River Street block in Ballina, collecting donations along the way.

Ms Ferris said the donation was appreciated by the volunteer wildlife rescue organisation.

“It would take us months to raise that much money,” she said.

She joined the Lions for part of the walk.

“The community outpouring of support was lovely to see,” she said.

She said the money would go towards the purchase of deep freezers for food for the animals in care.
