THE devastating impact of a lightning strike has been highlighted in a photograph taken on the Darling Downs.

The photo shows a length of 450mm poly pipe hit by lightning just west of Chinchilla on the western Downs.

It has been left a melted, mangled mess.

"Crikey, glad no one was standing near this pipe," the post on Higgins Storm Chasing's Facebook page reads.

"Here are the remains after it was hit by lightning."

The photo was taken by Corey Donaldson and posted on the Facebook page this afternoon.
