Lightning photo in running for National Geographic gong

HERVERY Bay photographer Ellen Foulds could be putting Bundaberg on the map with a little help from the local community.

Ms Foulds visited the city in 2012 during a time when the region was being lashed by storms and a record number of lightning strikes.

The keen photographer managed to snap a picture of the post office building in the centre of town just as a crackle of lightning appeared in the sky.

The photograph has since been entered into the National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest 2013.

In the description on her entry, Ms Foulds explains it was a stroke of luck that led her to capturing the impressive image.

"Whenever I travel it is always my mission to take images of night scene in the city's CBD, so we made a quick stop," she said.

"It was already drizzling so I quickly set up my camera on a tripod. The luck was on my side as it only took me a couple of minutes to take this shot."
