Woman lost husband, son as truck veered into them: court

WITH her husband behind the wheel and her kids curled up on the back seat, Juanita Horne drifted off to sleep.

When she woke, her life had changed forever.

A horrific car accident on the Bruce Hwy at West Stowe, near Gladstone, claimed the lives of her husband and son on June 27, 2010.

"I don't remember the crash, just the aftermath," Ms Horne told the Rockhampton District Court on Monday.

She was giving evidence at the trial of Capalaba man Anthony Glen Costin, who has pleaded not guilty to one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

The court heard Costin was driving a truck along the highway when it veered into the opposite lane and collided head on with the Caboolture family's vehicle about 4am.

Ms Horne's husband Richard, 31, and her son Isaac, 8, were killed instantly. Her four-year-old daughter Cady, though badly injured, survived.

Crown prosecutor Joshua Phillips said while Costin did not intend to cause the crash, he chose to drive in a state of "gross fatigue".

The court heard Costin was travelling with his son and a family friend from Capalaba to Bowen and back again in just two days.

Evidence suggested he only had about four or five hours sleep during the trip. However, the friend said she did not observe the defendant to be fatigued immediately before the accident.

"We were discussing our next stop... and then bang," she said. The court heard a thick fog covered parts of the highway. Another motorist told the court visibility was less than 50m at times. The trial continues.
