Lennox lifesaver’s rescue rewarded
SURF lifesaver Brian Dell from Lennox Head-Alstonville SLSC has received the SLSNSW Rescue of the Month award for saving the lives of two people.
Early on Sunday morning of July 4 this year, Daryl Williams and his two sons were rock fishing below Lennox Point when Daryl and one of his sons were washed off the rocks and thrown into dangerous surf.
Brian Dell was out paddling his surf ski at the time and saw the incident.
He paddled over and managed to help Daryl’s son onto the rock platform despite the huge waves.
Brian was unable to help Daryl on to the rocks and was forced to paddle his ski, with Daryl on it, approximately 100m north to escape the big surf.
After losing his paddle and unable to propel the ski any further, Brian swam out to a nearby fishing boat which was some distance away.
Thirty minutes later, Brian returned with the fishing boat and was able to rescue Daryl.
Brian directed the boat to where Daryl’s sons were sheltering on the rock platform and swam over to them.
He assisted them around the point to the carpark while Daryl was dropped back to the beach by the fishermen.
The SLSNSW Rescue of the Month aims to recognise excellence in lifesaving and service delivery.
