Lennox home in line for top award after renovation

RENOVATIONS to a property near Lennox Head have been shortlisted in the 2013 Houses Awards, one of Australia's most prestigious design accolades.

Chris Knapp, from architect firm Built Environment Practice, said the project, called The Dragonfly, was a finalist in the category for House Alteration and Addition under 200m2.

"The project was selected from nearly 250 entries nationally," he said.

"I'm very proud to have been shortlisted for this project, as it places my work alongside many of Australia's leading design practices, including last year's category winner from Brisbane and other notable practices from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

"It is a good run on the board for our local design community.

"I think this project provides evidence that very special, specific architecture and design truly thrives in the Northern Rivers region - both because of the incredible natural beauty that inspires people here, but also because of the high level of craftsmanship, creativity, and professional capacity available in the localindustry.

"For me, being shortlisted for the awards is a real affirmation that my approach is valued and valid."

The project was a 45m2 extension to an existing beach house in an exclusive nature-reserve community.

With extensive views of the Pacific Ocean and Lennox Head, The Dragonfly is situated on a rocky hillside, and Mr Knapp said it provided some challenges.

"It is a holiday house for my clients," he said. "They approached me and asked for a practical and straightforward addition - an extra bedroom and bathroom.

"But I was given a lot of latitude to be creative.

"I was able to have a bit of fun with it."

The winners of the 2013 Houses Awards will be announced in late July at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Mr Knapp is working on a new house in Lennox Head and a public art installation in Wellington.
