The lengths Beyoncé went to keep pregnancy secret

BEYONCE'S pregnancy announcement set the internet alight.

It smashed Selena Gomez's previously held Instagram record for the photo with the most likes and spawned hundreds of thousands of tweets and memes congratulating the singer and her rapper husband Jay-Z.

While everyone was over the moon at the announcement, there was another reason why the photo 'broke the internet'.

No one had the faintest idea the singer was pregnant, let alone with twins.

Beyoncé went to great lengths to hide the pregnancy and the last couple of months are evidence of that.

Most recently, there was a holiday video the singer posted to her Instagram on December 17 that had plenty of fans wondering if she was sneakily trying to reveal it back then.

The video, which has been viewed more than 13 million times, has snaps of the singer wearing a form-fitting navy blue dress.

While her baby bump is on clear display, one of the photos shows Beyoncé holding up two fingers to the camera and the next photo she makes a love heart with her hands.

But, apart from her Christmas video, the singer seemed to be extremely careful about showing off her burgeoning baby bump.

When the singer went to visit her pal Mariah Carey backstage on December 11, she wore an all black ensemble complete with a loose fitting top and a jacket to cover herself.

The two pop divas also posed for another shot on the same night but it was cleverly cropped to show just their chests and faces.

I love you @beyonce thank you sooooo much for coming out tonight! ❤️😘🎤🙌🏽💋#merrychristmas

A week before the divas hung backstage, Beyoncé and Jay-Z headed out for a private dinner at a Los Angeles restaurant.

Sources told PEOPLE, "Beyoncé wore a flowy dress and hid her baby bump."

Beyoncé made an appearance at Saturday Night Live in early November to watch her younger sister Solange Knowles perform and the singer seemed to be mindful of hiding her stomach.

In a video posted to her Instagram, the singer is seen with her hand on her stomach in one shot and another photo she hides behind Solange.

In a different photo from the same night, Beyoncé rests a carefully placed hand on her stomach as her husband Jay-Z walks with his arm around her.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing and looking back at the last couple of months it's hard to wonder why there weren't even rumours.

Until you realise that, when it comes to celebrities who are skilled at keeping secrets and hiding things, no one holds a candle to Beyoncé.

The singer managed to shock even her own record label when she released her self-titled album Beyoncé in 2013.

The world was also left reeling when she revealed her first pregnancy with Blue Ivy.

Taking the stage at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, the singer performed her single Love On Top and finished with a bang by opening her blazer and revealing the baby bump.
