Last-gasp try gives City exciting draw

RUGBY LEAGUE: Former Origin centre Will Hopoate put his hand up for a recall to the New South Wales side by scoring a last-minute try that saw City snatch a dramatic 26-all draw against Country in Dubbo yesterday.

Country had looked certain winners when it lead 26-10 late in the second half, before City produced three tries in the final four minutes.

Knights playmaker Jarrod Mullen and giant Panthers centre Jamal Idris both gave Blues coach Laurie Daley plenty of food for thought with outstanding displays.

Mullen clearly took the points in his battle with City opposite number Josh Reynolds to put a claim on the No.6 jersey held by under-pressure Roosters five-eighth James Maloney.

And Idris, who has been in career-best form for Penrith, was a tower of strength for Country, crossing for an early try from a brilliant Mullen kick, before putting winger James McManus over.

City fullback Matt Moylan, out-of-favour Test prop Andrew Fifita and Titans back David Mead also showed up strongly in the annual Origin trial.

Mead was outstanding at the back for Country and crossed twice in the first half to set up his team's 16-10 lead at the break.
