LACHLAN Levin died 12 times before he turned two.
And he still lives to tell the tale 24 years later.
"Locky" as he is known by his mates and family, suffers from cerebral palsy, a condition that he says isn't going to stop him from doing the things he loves.
"I work 12 to 14 hour days, I used to work seven days a week, I come home and have a beer and I do it all again," he said.
"It's all in your mind and about being determined to overcome the things you think will keep you down."
The condition, a non-contagious motor condition that causes physical disability in human development, has affected Locky's ability to walk properly. Every time he walks he is in pain, he says.
He revealed to The Morning Bulletin his back, which had a large dent in it and looked as though he had no back bone.
Locky's S1 and L5 vertebrae in his spine have split and are severing his spinal cord.
Doctors told Locky earlier this year he was a category five cerebral palsy case, which was one category short of being confined to a wheel chair.
Now the former Rockhampton man wants a helping hand from the public to back him up for spinal surgery.
His critical surgery, to be performed in Brisbane, could cost up to $50,000.
Locky can't get private health cover because all health funds deem him to have a pre-existing condition. Plus, because he is 25, he can't be on his mum's private cover as he is no longer classed as a dependent.
Locky has worked driving trucks for Gladstone contractors at various locations, including Curtis Island, but due to his waning condition he can't work to full capacity.
"My independence means a great deal and to be paralysed and unable to maintain my freedom is detrimental to my life."
Locky has a number of fundraising initiatives coming up in the coming weeks, including a festivities event at the Mt Larcom Royal Hotel on Sunday.
He has launched an appeal called Locky's Op Appeal and has been granted sanction from Fair Trading Queensland to fundraise.
If you would like to donate to Locky's appeal here are his details.
