KYOGLE golfer Jayme Walters will get the chance to play alongside a professional at the New South Wales Open Junior Pro-Am event in Sydney today.
The 16-year-old is one of 74 junior golfers from across NSW to be selected to partner a Australasian PGA Tour professional at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.
Walters went to Palm Meadows golf club on the Gold Coast for a private lesson on Sunday before leaving for the event with his family yesterday.
"I'm really honoured to represent the (Kyogle) club and I'm sure it will be a great experience,” Walters said.
"I've played in two tournaments like this before but I don't think I'll know anyone down there or who I'm playing with yet.
"I take it all pretty seriously and really like to go as far as I can with it.
"A lot of the guys there will be playing off scratch and I'm looking forward to playing on the nice fairways and solid greens.”
Walters only started playing golf three years ago and is in his second year of playing 18-hole competition.
He has had limited training but has had lessons at Kyogle with Malcolm Wallace as well as Lismore professional Peter Jaeger and the North Coast Academy of Sport team.
"My pop got me a set of golf clubs for Christmas three years ago and I fell in love with it straight away,” Walters said.
"I wasn't sure if I would at the time but I've stopped playing rugby league and just focus on golf now.”
Junior golfers are travelling from as far west as Coonabarabran, south from Eden and north to the Tweed.
The Pro-Am has selected juniors for a second straight year and is a prelude to the NSW Open Championship which runs for three days starting tomorrow.
Walters plays off a handicap of 10 but has been as low as six in the past.
"A lot of guys will be playing off scratch (in the Pro-Am) and I want to work towards that,” Walters said.
"I want to thank the Kyogle Vets and cadets for fundraising and helping me get to the the tournament. I always appreciate the support from the club.”
