Koala a species under threat
NO TREE, no me. Today could be a big day for the koala.
Environment Minister Tony Burke is due to make a decision regarding the koala being listed as an endangered species.
Australian Koala Foundation CEO Deborah Tabart is concerned Mr Burke may delay his decision.
"They say it is because they have too many submissions to read from the senate inquiry and need more time," she said.
"I am afraid I cannot support the logic behind this.
"All these submissions have been condensed into a 200-page report, which clearly shows that the koala is in trouble."
The Observer ran a story calling for residents of the Gladstone region to contact them if there had been koala sightings - there have been no reports received.
"There is no easy fix to save the koala's habitat, but that said, if you do not cut their trees down in the first place, it does give them a fighting chance," Ms Tabart said.
She said today was an historical day for koalas.
