Kennedy makes most of waves
THERE has been mixed results for Far North Coast surfers at the Australian Open of Surfing in Manly this week.
Lennox Head and World Championship Tour surfer Adam Melling was eliminated early in the second round on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Stuart Kennedy has fared the best of the FNC surfers in the open men's section, advancing to the third round of the competition.
He scored a 14.77 (out of a possible 20) in tricky small conditions.
Suffolk Park surfer Soli Bailey was eliminated in the semi-final of the junior pro section yesterday.
He registered the highest single wave score of the event so far with a 9.90.
"The level of surfing at this event has stepped up," Bailey said.
"I saw my second-round heat and couldn't believe how many good surfers I was up against.
"Then in the quarter-finals there were some big international guys and the heats were really tough.
"I didn't have a solid plan going into this event - I just wanted to get a roll on and post a big result."
Byron Bay surfer Garrett Parkes competed in the open men's and was an early elimination in the first round.
Lennox Head surfer Stephanie Single has been eliminated from the pro junior competition but is still in the open women's section.
The competition is expected to finish on Sunday.
