Kelly's courage helps Giants seal win over Eagles

IT SEEMED like we'd run out of words to describe Josh Kelly.

Skilful, classy, in-demand, sublime.

But on Saturday afternoon, the star Giant made sure the football world added another compliment to his resume: courageous.

With eight minutes left in the final quarter and the game in the balance - the Giants held a seven-point lead - Kelly was streaming back into his defensive 50, with his eyes only for the ball.

The problem was, Josh Kennedy was coming the other way. The Eagles spearhead crashed into Kelly, who was down for a number of minutes, then left the field for treatment - before returning moments later.

If the Giants weren't keen to make every moment count before that, Kelly's actions would have been just the spur-on they needed.

"If your teammates don't get a lift from that, they're not human," dual premiership player David King said on Fox Footy.

Kelly would finish his night with a career-best 43 disposals, 19 contested possessions, seven intercept possessions, eight clearances and seven score involvements.

And, to top off an exceptional day out, the Giant kicked a classy goal to ice the game as his side ran out 12.9.81 to 9.6.60 winners.

"Today he has gone back to his superman best that he has displayed many times this season," Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy said on Fox Footy.

"Brilliant skills, super courage and he's the full package.

"No wonder everyone wants him in their camp."

Not that the man of the moment was about to brag.

After the game, Kelly played down his courage - even if it was on show for all to see - as a matter of just getting the job done.

"I had no idea he was coming. That's part of footy and you just have to do that," Kelly said on Fox Footy after the game.

"That's what happens, oh well."
