Keeper switches between Sydney rivals
FOOTBALL: Former Sydney FC goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic has caught plenty of attention with his mid-season move to cross-town rivals Western Sydney this week.
Janjetovic is the first player to move directly between the two Sydney clubs since the Wanderers entered the competition in 2012, though other players have played for both clubs.
With the rivalry that has grown in recent years, it is a move that is sure to add extra spice to the next derby between the two clubs.
There were plenty of Wanderers fans who voiced their displeasure on social media, and they were joined by former Sydney FC and current Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Ivan Necevski, who couldn't help but take a cheeky clip at his ex-teammate.
Commenting on a Sydney fan's Facebook status, which condemned the goalkeeper's move to the Wanderers, Necevski made reference to an advertising campaign where Janjetovic spoke about his love for the Sky Blues.
In the advertisement for Sydney FC, the goalkeeper said: "Sky Blue runs through my veins and those of my family as well.”
Sydney FC boss Graham Arnold told The Daily Telegraph this week that he didn't want Janjetovic to leave, but his hand was forced.
"I never wanted Vedran to leave. I wanted two No.1 goalkeepers - Vedran chose to leave and he forced our hand to leave,” Arnold said.
"So it's with regret from my side that we have released him, that's all I'll say on it. It's a complicated matter.”
Janjetovic has been well known for his passion in Sydney derbies, with his decision to sign for Western Sydney provoking mixed reactions from both Sydney FC and Wanderers supporters.
Janjetovic, who trained formally with the club for the first time on Tuesday, wasted no time settling into his new surroundings, saying he was "happy to be home”.
"I live just around the corner from our training base so it feels like home,” he said.
"I've heard a lot about the club and what a good place it is to be. I haven't trained in a little while so I've got to get up to speed. There are a lot of challenges ahead but I'm looking forward to every single one of them.”
Janjetovic made 100 appearances for Sydney FC, including the 2015 grand final, won by Melbourne Victory.
He has signed an 18-month contract with Tony Popovic's side, which has lacked consistency in goal this campaign.
