Rescue mission: 36 puppies, kittens saved from death row
WHEN Karina Taylor saw the eyes of 36 kittens and puppies staring up at her from Facebook, she knew she had to save them.
The Bundaberg RSPCA manager organised a rescue mission to Rockhampton to save the animals scheduled to be euthanized the next day.
While in Rockhampton Karina's team picked up another five animals on death row.
Mrs Taylor said she was enjoying a day off when she spotted the cute puppies and kittens on Facebook.
"I saw the post from Capricorn Animal Aid saying they were due to be euthanized the next morning," Mrs Taylor said.
"I immediately got on the phone and said I would take them.
"Some of the kittens are a bit sick and will go into foster care, as will some of the puppies, but some are looking for homes now."
The animal lover said Rockhampton Council didn't have anywhere to put the animals and the city didn't have a RSPCA shelter.
"The kittens and puppies didn't ask to be born and don't deserve to be put down," she said.
"When I saw those puppies and kittens looking up at me, what could I do?
"People need to desex their animals and this sort of thing wouldn't happen."
Mrs Taylor said she was confident of re-homing the animals in Bundaberg, if not they would be given to other RSPCA shelters to find a home.
Rockhampton Regional Councillor Ellen Smith, whose divison includes the pound, said the council appreciated any assistance rescue agencies could provide to animals in the pound; while also reminding residents of their individial responsibilities.
"We cannot stress enough how important it is for pet owners to be responsible and desex their pets so the Council and rescue agencies are not overflowing with unwanted animals," she said.
"To help alleviate the costs for agencies who rescue from our pound, we intend to provide them with a cash bonus of $100 per dog and $50 per cat."
