FOREIGN Affairs Minister Kevin Rudd has finally found his groove.

A packed Suncorp Stadium roared their approval of the former Prime Minister’s music taste when he popped out of U2’s backstage door just before their set last night in Brisbane.

The Irish music gods rocked the city with old and new songs on the colossal, extraterrestrial-like stage, aptly named The Claw.

Impossible to explain, but gobsmacking to look at, Bono’s circular invention allowed a 360 degree view of the audience, and a cylindrical screen meant every seat in the house could view the band for the whole two hours and 15 minutes.

The wrap-around platform glowed, rotated, flashed, produced umbrellas, a swinging mike in the shape of itself, and even a disco ball.

The only thing it didn’t have was a pot of gold and a leprechaun, and who’s to say it didn’t?

I didn’t see it, but I’d believe it.

But Bono, the Edge, Adam and Larry could have mesmerised the crowd even without the theatrics, with “Mysterious Ways”, “Elevation”, “Vertigo”, and of course, “With or Without You”.

The only dampener to an otherwise unforgettable experience, apart from the light shower half-way through the show, was no indication of a Rockhampton tour in the future.

U2 will continue their Australian 360-degree tour in Sydney and Perth.
