More trouble for Manchester United

JOSE Mourinho's humiliation of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly has stunned their Manchester United teammates.

Jones missed the Red Devils' eighth penalty in Tuesday's Carabao Cup shootout defeat to Derby, with Bailly waiting his turn.

And boss Mourinho admitted: "I knew we were going to be in trouble with Jones and with Eric. I knew we were going to be in trouble then."

The public ridiculing of the pair has had as much of a negative impact on the squad as Mourinho telling Paul Pogba he will never captain United again and their subsequent training-ground bust-up in front of TV cameras.

Pogba's relationship with his manager has been strained since last season when the Frenchman was dropped for the Champions League clash against Sevilla.

Jones' poor penalty against the Rams was saved by 'keeper Scott Carson and handed Jose's former Chelsea player Frank Lampard a stunning 8-7 shootout victory at Old Trafford.

United teammates now fear defensive duo Jones and Bailly are being targeted just like Luke Shaw was last season when the England left-back was humiliated by Mourinho.

His criticism has also confirmed where the pair are in the Portuguese's pecking order, with Jones starting only one Premier League game so far this season, the 3-0 Old Trafford thumping by Spurs.

Against Derby Bailly was making his first start since sloppy defending in the 3-2 defeat to Brighton last month.

The Ivory Coast international, 24, has a contract until 2020, while 26-year-old Jones' expires at the end of this season.

Shaw now appears to be back in Mourinho's good books, scoring United's second in the opening-day 2-1 win over Leicester and starting five of their six Prem games this season.

He has proved it is possible to make a comeback, although the United boss is likely to change his defence again for tomorrow's clash against West Ham.

Pogba is back in contention for a starting place after getting rested against Derby, when it was revealed he would be stripped of the vice-captaincy.
