MACKAY'S Tyler Jones has taken the first step towards his dream of gaining a draft selection into the AFL.

Jones was named yesterday in the Queensland Scorpions under-18 squad to compete in the national championships in June and July.

The national championships at various venues are seen as a springboard for players to gain recognition, leading to possible draft selection in November.

Jones, 18, a former North Mackay Saints player now lining up for Redlands in Brisbane, has just returned from a 15-month rehabilitation from osteitis pubis, a debilitating groin injury.

Mackay AFL development manager David Harding said the selection was great reward for persistence by the young player.

The players were selected from members of the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns under-18 academies.
