DESPITE fears of a rise in Australia's jobless rate next year, the unemployment rate dropped 0.1% in September, to 5.6%, new data revealed on Thursday.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics jobs figures showed the number of unemployed Australians fell 14,700 to 697,000 last month.

It also showed the number of employed people rose by 9100 to just over 11.6 million, on the back of a 9100-strong increase in full and part-time employment.

Both men in new full-time jobs and women in new part-time jobs drove the rise, with full-timers up 5000 to 8.1 million and part-timers up 4100 to 3.5 million in September.

The numbers of hours worked also fell during September, down 6.4 million hours to 1.6 billion hours worked by all Australians.
