Jets match is two sleeps away

Rugby League: CHARLEVILLE’S Michael Purcell – the Jets’ try scoring machine – will be returning home this weekend, and he hopes the visit will inspire some local boys to follow their dreams too.

Purcell grew up in Charleville but played for Mitchell’s A-grade side. He’s since moved on to even bigger and better things, playing for the Ipswich Jets.

He said he’d been inspired as a young pup by footy idols on TV, and hoped that the big Country Week match with the Burleigh Bears would have a similar effect.

“I think a few around Charleville and around that surrounding area (will be watching).

“I think they sort of see a bit of an idol in me.”

Purcell, a lightning quick Ipswich Jets back scored 10 tries in just two weeks of the Brisbane Rugby League competition.

“I’d love to see kids out that way come down... to come play footy in the big smoke,” he said.

He said the Country Week events would hopefully give them “that bit of motivation”. The Jets will also offer training sessions while in town.

Many Western kids have moved from kicking a footy around the backyard to playing on the big field with the Jets, including big back Liam Capewell. He also plays for Cronulla.

Michael said he was particularly feared for his big hard tackles.

The Jets, last year’s Intrust Super Cup winners, were led by Quilpie-born Keiron Lander.

Game kicks off at 3pm, with a nominal $5 entry fee. Stick around to watch the Comets take on the Mighty Meatants.
