SHONTINA Rose Rickeard has her sights set on the crown.

The former Sunshine Coast resident will compete tomorrow in the Miss Universe state finals at Jupiters Hotel and Casino on the Gold Coast.

The 19-year-old was encouraged by family and friends to put in an application.

"I'm very excited and very nervous, but mostly excited. It's a great opportunity," she said.

Miss Rickeard (pictured) said Miss Australia and Miss Universe 2004 winner Jennifer Hawkins was an inspiration.

"I'd love to become successful like her and help others like she has," she said.

"It would just be a great experience."

A model for years, Miss Rickeard recently moved to the Gold Coast to continue her career.

She has signed with Katz Model Agency and appears on catwalks as well as in commercials, even featuring recently in a Bollywood film.

Tomorrow's state finalists will be assessed on swimwear, evening wear and the personality question-and-answer section.

"I've been reading newspapers lately," Miss Rickeard said.

"The questions are completely random so you've got to be prepared to talk on a bunch of different topics."

The state finalists will compete at the Australian finals on July 12 in Melbourne.

From there, the national winner will represent the country at the International Miss Universe Pageant later this year.

Judges for the Queensland final include Olympic gold medallist Leisel Jones and My Kitchen Rules contestants and Coast residents Jake and Elle Harrison.
