Jedinak a big doubt for Socceroos' Syria playoff

THE Socceroos look set to go into battle against Syria without captain Mile Jedinak, after he was again left out of Aston Villa's squad in the win over Nottingham Forest.

Jedinak, who had groin surgery in the off-season and has played just 45 minutes for Villa this campaign but came off after feeling soreness again, is a long shot to be ready for the high-intensity World Cup qualifiers even if Ange Postecoglou names him in the final 23 players.

China-based defender Trent Sainsbury remains a concern, failing to feature in Jiangsu Suning's squad in the home loss to Guizhou.

Sainsbury, arguably the Socceroos' most important defender, has played just one game since returning to his club, on September 9.

Massimo Luongo was last week labelled the best midfielder in the Championship by his manager Ian Holloway and his absence was felt, withdrawn late due to a virus in QPR's 0-0 draw with Burton Albion.

Attackers Tomi Juric and Tom Rogic were the headline acts of the Aussies Abroad, the latter scoring the opener in his dominant 62-minute display in the 2-0 win at Rangers.

Juric scored a brace, including a neat right-footed finish, but after scoring from the spot missed an 82nd minute penalty which would have earnt Luzern a point in a 3-2 loss to Lausanne.

Aaron Mooy played 90 minutes in Huddersfield's 0-0 draw at Burnley, while Brad Smith was not in the Bournemouth squad. Mat Ryan's Brighton hosts Newcastle United tonight.

In-form Mat Leckie could not add to his four goals this season, playing 72 minutes in Hertha Berlin's 1-0 loss at Mainz.

Keeper Mitch Langerak was unused sub for Spanish side Levante, who beat Real Sociedad.

Championship duo Jackson Irvine and Jackson Irvine both played 90 minutes as their respective teams Hull City and Bristol City drew.

Mark Birighitti was named man of the match in NAC Breda's 2-0 upset away to champions Feyenoord, whose Aussie keeper Brad Jones gifted NAC the late sealer. Danny Vukovic played in Genk's 1-1 draw with Oostende.

Defender Milos Degenek played in Yokohama F Marinos' 3-2 loss at Ventforet Kofu.

Winger Craig Goodwin played 90 minutes for Sparta Rotterdam in their 1-0 loss at ADO Den Haag, while Awer Mabil played 30 minutes in Pacos de Ferreira's 2-0 loss to Benfica.

Robbie Kruse (Bochum), Jamie Maclaren (Darmstadt), bolter Nikita Rukavystsya (Maccabi Haifa) and left-sided options Alex Gersbach (Rosenborg) and Aziz Behich (Bursaspor) are in action tonight.

Postecoglou will trim the 30-man squad on Wednesday. There is one more round of club action next weekend before the players fly into Malaysia to join the Socceroos camp ahead of the October 5 first leg.
