Jason humbled by award win

JASON Sines Junior, who is off to study medicine at the University of NSW in Sydney this year, was named Ballina Shire's Young Citizen of the Year at last week's Australia Day ceremony.

Jason was, in 2011, the first Aboriginal student to be the dux of Ballina High School, and was president of the school's Student Representative Council and Leo Club.

He also sat on the North Coast's Student Equity Advisory Team which discusses what individual schools had done to achieve towards equity.

On receiving the award, he said he was "really humbled and honoured".

He said the calibre of nominations for all the Ballina Shire Australia Day awards was inspiring.

While he said he was "nervous" about moving to the big city, he hopes to return to the area to work upon graduation.
