It's clean-up time again

NSW is home to the most polluted rivers and creeks in Australia, according to Clean Up Australia Day founder Ian Kiernan AO.

Announcing the release of the 2010 Rubbish Report, Mr Kiernan called on communities to come together to clean up bushland, rivers and creeks during this year’s Clean Up Australia Day on March 6.

“A big community effort is needed in regional NSW to clean up the waste dumped recklessly in our environment,” Mr Kiernan said.

An estimated 40 sites across the region will be cleaned as part of this year’s event. Sites include the Cape Byron State Conservation Area and the Cumbebin Wetlands nearByron Bay, along Kingsford Smith Drive in Ballina, at Maguires Creek in Alstonville, at Clifford Park in Goonellabah, and at the Kyogle Showground.

The 2nd Casino Scouts Group will be doing their bit, cleaning up around the Casino boat ramp at McDonalds Park.

“I see it as a good opportunity to get the Scouts more involved in the community,” Scouts leader Matthew Needham said.

An estimated 236,100 volunteers removed over 6000 tonnes of rubbish from NSW during the 2010 event. Nationally, over 15,000 tonnes of rubbish was removed. Plasticaccounted for 37 per cent of all rubbish collected, and cigarette butts were the top individual item found.

Clean Up Australia estimates that volunteers have devoted more than 24 million hours to the clean-up.
