Vet's invention makes treating horses safer

WITH the annual horses' birthday approaching on August 1, volunteers at Riding for the Disabled thought it was a good time to get the dentist in.

Domestic horses, like humans, should have their teeth checked about once a year.

Equine vet Dr Oliver Liyou is based in Grafton but travels all over the Northern Rivers with his purpose-built trailer that allows him to restrain the animals and stop them biting the hand that files them.

Dr Liyou and his brother actually designed the Porta-Safestock and they have since sold about 60 of them to other vets around the country.

"It makes it safe and I can really show the owner what is going on (inside the horse's mouth)," he said.

The horses are also sedated before their mouths are clamped open and Dr Liyou said they will have recovered and won't remember a thing by the time he has hitched up his trailer and hit the road again.

When we visited, Dr Liyou had a horse called Trooper in position.

Trooper's back teeth had sharp points on them that were cutting into his cheeks.

With a tool that would have had any human running screaming from the dentist's chair, he was able to file them back then clean out the mouth with a hose, clean the gums and make sure there were no diseases in the mouth.

Trooper then staggered off, looking a little groggy.

Happy birthday horses.
