Fraser Island wins Australia's top island getaway in UK poll

IT MIGHT be one of the Fraser Coast's weakest international markets, but the region could see a boost in visitors from the United Kingdom thanks to The Telegraph newspaper.

Fraser Island was named Australia's best island getaway in a reader poll run by The Telegraph travel section earlier this month.

The island, billed as paradise in the poll, beat out Kangaroo Island in South Australia and Rottnest Island in Western Australia for the top spot.

The poll is welcome exposure for the Fraser Coast in the UK, with new figures showing the backpacking market from Europe continues to decline.

A snapshot of tourism in the region for 2012 was released by Tourism Queensland last week.

It showed the Fraser Coast's reliance on the European market had seen international visits decline to its lowest level in more than a decade.

While the overall number of visitors increased by 2% compared to the previous year, international visitors went down by 10%.

The UK market showed the biggest decrease, dropping 21% compared to the previous year.

The Fraser Coast did see strong growth in domestic visitors, mostly from Queensland.

Intrastate visitors accounted for 71% of all visitors to the Fraser Coast in 2012.

"Much of the growth from intrastate holiday-makers to the Fraser Coast was for short breaks of one to three nights," the report said.

Day trip visitors to the Fraser Coast also increased by 28% compared to 2011.
